Scarborough catering for family parties: a planning guide

Toronto BBQ Catering 9 min read

Scarborough catering for a family party starts with the room and the menu, not a note that only says “food for the family.” Family party catering in Scarborough covers milestone birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, religious and cultural celebrations, holiday meals and baby showers. Toronto BBQ Catering matches hosts with independent local caterers. We do not cook, staff the party or run a kitchen. Send the neighbourhood, date, headcount and dietary notes on the free request form. The caterer quotes, cooks and brings the food, and stays only if you booked staff. Prices below are rough estimates that vary by caterer, not our price. See the menu and price guide.

Scarborough is part of the City of Toronto, listed under Toronto.

Which gathering you are feeding

Name the occasion. A 70th and a baby shower are not the same job.

Milestone birthdays and anniversaries

Say whose party it is, and whether someone else is bringing the cake. An anniversary is one sitting. An open house grazes for two or three hours, so the food has to hold and someone has to refill.

Religious and cultural celebrations

Name the observance and the date your household uses. Diwali or Deepavali, Christmas Eve, Eid, a Tamil or Sri Lankan celebration, Lunar New Year and a baptism lunch are different briefs. The caterer confirms the dishes.

Sunday, 8 November 2026, or the Friday or Monday beside it, may be Diwali for your guests. Some families use another regional date.

Reunions, holidays and smaller gatherings

A reunion is often the biggest list. One meal and two meals are different quotes. Say if leftovers are meant to be dinner.

In 2026, Christmas Eve is Thursday 24 December, Christmas Day is Friday 25 December, Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December, and New Year’s Eve is Thursday 31 December. Many families use Saturday 5, 12 or 19 December instead. Name the day. A baby shower is a smaller afternoon graze, so do not order reunion quantity for it.

Cuisines to name

Say the style, or the dishes that have to be there.

South Asian, Tamil and Sri Lankan

South Asian and Indian catering might be dal, paneer or chicken, a vegetable, rice, bread and raita, or a biryani or thali. Say which.

Tamil and Sri Lankan orders are often rice and several curries, string hoppers (idiyappam), hoppers (appam) or kottu. Hoppers need someone on site. A tray that waits goes soft. Ask for a mild curry as well, and name fish, mutton or halal when that is required.

Chinese, Filipino, Caribbean and Middle Eastern

  • Chinese. Rice or noodles, a vegetable, tofu or chicken. Ask what holds in a pan. Soy sauce matters for gluten, and oyster sauce for shellfish and vegetarians.
  • Filipino. Rice, pancit, chicken or pork adobo, and lumpia. Pork cannot be the only hot main if anyone keeps halal or skips pork. Lumpia is often not gluten-free. Ask before you expect lechon.
  • Caribbean. Rice and peas, jerk chicken, roti, plantain. Keep the heat on the side. Name goat or oxtail if you want them.
  • Middle Eastern. Rice, grilled chicken or kofta, salads, mezze. Separate the meat pans from the vegetarian ones.

Halal, vegetarian and barbecue

Halal is a rule on the protein, for the whole order or a counted share, in labelled pans with their own spoons. Pork cannot be the only hot food. See halal catering. We do not certify it.

Vegetarians need a real main. See vegan and vegetarian catering. No onion or garlic is not a Jain list, so add root vegetables if those are out too. Barbecue can be chicken, brisket or burgers, and pulled pork only if pork is welcome. Many condo rooms do not allow open flame. See BBQ catering.

Where the food has to go

Name the neighbourhood: Agincourt, Malvern, Wexford, condos near Scarborough Town Centre, Guildwood, Cliffside, West Hill or Highland Creek. Home parties go through private party catering.

A house

Say if a van can wait in the driveway, if there are stairs, and if an oven holds hotel pans. From November, serve indoors.

A condo party room

Book the room first, including setup and cleanup. Ask about the service elevator, parking, a door code, and any ban on chafer fuel. Write the end time. We do not book the room.

A community centre or a banquet hall

Call the centre and ask if an outside caterer is allowed, if there is a kitchen, and when you must leave. For a hall, ask about a preferred-caterer list, an outside-caterer fee, tables, power and load-in. We do not supply alcohol or book the room. Write what the venue allows.

A park, including along the Bluffs

Bluffer’s Park, Guild Park and Gardens, Cathedral Bluffs Park and East Point Park are along the Scarborough Bluffs. Ask the City of Toronto whether your date, headcount, tent, grill or caterer needs a permit. Use the pages for a one-time park or recreation booking and a special-event booking. Fees and rules change, so this guide does not state them. We do not apply for permits or reserve parks. If a late-fall or December date is not bookable, or the wind off the lake makes a buffet unrealistic, move indoors.

Drop-off or staff on site

These are different quotes. See on-site grilling versus drop-off catering in Toronto.

Drop-off. Food arrives hot. Your family serves. Ask if plates, cutlery, chafers and a pan pickup are included, and if chafer fuel is allowed.

Staffed service. The caterer sets up, refills and clears. Use it for a hall or a long open house, and ask when the crew leaves.

A live grill is a third quote, only where flame is allowed and, in a park, only after you have checked the City’s current rules.

Allergies, children and elders

Put a number on each restriction. “A few vegetarians” is not a count.

  • Halal. Whole order or a subset, labelled pans, own spoons.
  • Vegetarian and vegan. A labelled main. Keep dairy off a vegan pan.
  • Gluten-free. Ask about soy sauce, breads, lumpia, gravy and dessert. Separate spoon.
  • Nuts. Mithai and some sauces. “No nuts in these trays” is not a nut-free kitchen unless the caterer confirms it in writing.
  • Shellfish, sesame, egg and dairy. Give a count and ask for a separate pan.

We do not certify allergens or halal.

Say how many guests are under 12, and ask for a mild tray with sauces on the side. We do not set a children’s price. Pack an allergic child’s food on its own. Older guests need a seat off the buffet line and easier dishes, such as rice, dal, noodles or boneless meat. Less salt is a request for the caterer, not medical advice. One mild pan, with hot sauce beside it, works across generations.

How much to order

Count every eater, including children and late arrivals. Send a working number and the day you will lock it.

For barbecue, start from how much food to plan per person: about 150 to 225 grams of cooked meat per person when sides are on the plate. That figure is not a thali, a rice-and-curry spread, Chinese family-style or mezze. Ask how a shared table is counted, and say if the meal is one sitting or a long graze.

How far ahead, from late October

Other lead times are in how far ahead to book catering in Toronto. We do not hold a date. Only the caterer can say they are free.

From 21 October 2026, the next two weeks are short notice. A small drop-off may still be possible. A staffed Saturday often is not, so offer a second day.

Send one of the December dates above now, with a backup. A weekday-evening drop-off is easier to place than staff on the Saturday before Christmas. Send an 8 November Diwali dinner on its own. Check the City calendar before a park date is firm.

What to put on the request

  1. Occasion, date, a second date, and serve time.
  2. Scarborough neighbourhood and the venue: home, condo room, community centre, hall or park.
  3. For a park, that you will confirm any City of Toronto permit. For a room, the end time, access and whether flame is allowed.
  4. Headcount, with adults, children and older guests split out, and the day you will lock it.
  5. One sitting or a graze, and whether leftovers are a second meal.
  6. Cuisine, the dishes that must be included, and whether pork, beef or fish is out.
  7. Halal, vegetarian, vegan, Jain or no-onion, gluten-free and allergy counts, plus labels.
  8. Drop-off or staff, how long anyone stays, and who keeps leftovers.
  9. Plates, cutlery, chafers, and when pans are picked up.
  10. A budget ceiling. The quote is the price.
  11. Name and mobile number of the person meeting the driver.

A planning range, not a price from us

We do not set prices. As a rough typical GTA estimate that varies by caterer, hosts often see drop-off around $18 to $35 per person, full service around $35 to $90, and a live-fire station around $40 to $75, in Canadian dollars before tax. That is not our price. A December Saturday, a long crew, a small headcount, a condo stop, tax or a hall fee can sit outside those bands. The caterer’s email is the price. See the menu and price guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cook for a Scarborough family party?

No. The matched caterer quotes, cooks and serves. We do not run a kitchen.

Which cuisines can the request name?

Any style above, or a counted mix. The caterer confirms the dishes.

Is drop-off enough for a full house?

Yes, if your family will serve and can keep the food hot. Use staff for a hall or a long open house.

Can one order cover halal, vegetarian and allergies?

Yes, with counts and separate labelled pans. We do not certify the kitchen.

Can we use a park along the Bluffs?

Only after you check the City of Toronto permit pages for that site and date. We do not book parks.

How far ahead is a December family meal?

Send it now, with a second date. We do not hold the day.

Send the request

When the date, room and headcount are clear enough to price, use the free request form. We introduce an independent local caterer. They quote. If you book, they cook and serve.
